The Suffolk Sheep

The Suffolk sheep is one of the best know sheep breeds around the world.  Being developed by crossing Southdown Rams with Norfolk Horn Ewes, the breed became recognised as a pure breed in 1810.  They had previously been referred to as Blackfaces or Southdown Norfolks.

The Suffolk is a large bodied, muscular sheep with a strong black face and legs with face, ears and legs all being clear of fleece.  Both sexes are polled and have dense, close fleeces.  Although the breed varies slightly around the world, they are characterized as being long bodied, well muscled animals that are good on their legs.

Because of its exceptional growth rates and versatility, the Suffolk is one of the primary terminal sire breeds across the globe.  Suffolk and Suffolk cross lambs mature quickly and have a lean carcass with little excess fat.

A big ewe can easily weigh in over 100kgs and a mature ram can tip the scales at over 120kgs.
